BRITISH INDIAN ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY FELLOWSHIP 2025
The British Indian Orthopaedic Society is proud to support fellowships to enable budding orthopaedic surgeons to enhance their experience and work with experienced orthopaedic surgeons in India and United Kingdom. The fellowships are available for surgeons in the UK (including BOTA members) and from various organisations in India with Memoranda of Understanding (MOU’s) with us. All fellowships have an element of financial and organisational support (if they have not arranged their own fellowships). Selected fellows will be expected to organise their own transport and accommodation.
All fellowships will be advertised on BIOS (and BOTA) websites from February 2026, interviews will be held within four weeks of the last date. Fellowships should be undertaken before the next BIOSCON (Annual Conference) where fellows will present their reports.
Fellowships originating in India will be advertised on IOA and State website on a standard shortlisting form. Interviews will be carried out with a BIOS representative. Selected candidates with be provided with the Indian Equivalent of £1500 by their organisations after submission of a report. They will also present the report at the next BIOSCON (Annual Conference).

BIOS-FINOLEX-IOA Travelling Fellowship (TWO) – To be announced
Fellowships from the United Kingdom to India
BIOS-BOTA Travelling Fellowship (TWO)
This is an annual travelling fellowship grant of £2000, offered to eligible BOTA trainees interested in visiting surgical centres in India.
Two grants each year.
1. Suggested duration- 2 to 4 weeks.
2. The Fellowship would be advertised by BOTA and two suitable candidates would be chosen by a panel with representatives from BIOS and BOTA after interview.
3. Selected trainee to present fellowship report at the next BIOS annual meeting.
4. BIOS can help facilitate placement in India, based on the selected candidate‘s preference of specialty, city etc as far as possible.
BIOS-IOA Travelling Fellowships (TWO)
- Two travelling fellowships in collaboration with Indian Orthopaedic Association- BIOS-IOA Fellowships which will enable BIOS members to spend time in orthopaedic centres of excellence in India, in their chosen sub speciality
- Senior trainees or consultants within first five years of their appointment.
- 1500£ will be awarded by BIOS to successful candidate. Candidates will be responsible for their travel/accommodation costs in India.
- Candidates are encouraged to choose the hospital they would like to visit in India and liaise with responsible authority in that hospital to facilitate their fellowship. If they need help with organization of fellowships, they can approach Education Secretary of BIOS.
BIOS-MUKUL MADHAV FOUNDATION Travelling Fellowships (TWO)
2. Suggested duration- 2 to 4 weeks.
3. The Fellowship would be advertised by BIOS and two suitable candidates would be chosen after interview. A letter of motivation is to be included where the candidate should describe his career aspirations and how the fellowship would be useful to his future career and also include if he/she would be interested in supporting the Mukul-Madhav Foundation with charity work.
4. Selected fellows to present fellowship report at the next BIOS annual meeting.
5. BIOS can help facilitate placement in India, based on the selected candidate‘s preference of specialty, city etc as far as possible.
Application Process
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply with a covering letter, a copy of their CV and a proposed travelling programme (duration of fellowship, subspecialty of interest and hospital they want to visit)
Applications will be judged on the following criteria.
1. CV
2. Contributions to BIOS
3. Candidate’s proposal for the fellowship, including plans for the use of allocated funding
4. Alignment of the fellowship with future career aims
The successful candidates will be expected to present a short fellowship report at The Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA)Conference, in Guwahati. The Candidate’s Conference registration and accommodation will be arranged by IOA

Advertisements will be published in March every year.
Last date for sending in applications will be July every year.
Interviews of the shortlisted candidates will be held virtually in May every year
Fellowships should be completed before December every year.
Fellowships from India to the United Kingdom
BIOS-IOA Travelling Fellowship (TWO – SENIOR and JUNIOR IOA Fellowships)
1) Two fellowships – Senior and Junior Fellowship Programme open to Orthopaedic Surgeons practicing in India. Timelines will be advertised on the IOA website.
2) Senior Travelling Fellowship (Open to Orthopaedic surgeons with more than 5 years’ experience after post-graduation and >45 years of age) – 1 position.
Junior Travelling Fellowship (Open to Orthopaedic surgeons with less than 5 years’ experience after post-graduation and <45 years of age ) – 1 position
3) SELECTION PROCESS & TIMELINE (BIOS-IOA SENIOR & JUNIOR FELLOWS)
The selection is based on academic achievements, professional standing and the overall contribution to Orthopaedics and Trauma of the candidate. This will be conducted by the Indian Orthopaedic Association
The Education Secretary will send letter of invitation to successful candidates by 15th February approximately. Letter of visa support will be sent by Education secretary once the invitation has been accepted by the Fellow.
4. FELLOWSHIP BURSARY
Junior BIOS Fellows: IOA will pay Rs1,50,000 as Fellowship Bursary. BOA will provide complimentary registration at the annual BOA meeting.
Senior BIOS Fellows: : IOA will pay Rs1,50,000 as Fellowship Bursary. BOA will provide complimentary registration at the annual BOA meeting.
All fellows have to arrange their own Accommodation and travel (BIOS will provide logistical assistance). All sundry expenses including visa fees and other arrangements will be borne by the fellows.
BIOS STATE Travelling Fellowships (TWO Fellows each)

1. All State fellows will be selected via interview at State Orthopaedic Association Conferences in January/February every year with a BIOS representative present.
2. Selected fellows will be granted a Rs1,50,000 bursary towards costs and presented with a Certificate (after submission of a Fellowship report) by their state organisations.
3. BIOS will assist the fellows for placement at a BIOS centre. All living/travelling arrangements will be completed by fellows themselves.
4. Some hospitals may have costs towards health checks.
5. The fellowships are envisaged strictly to commence two weeks prior to and concluding with attendance and report presentation at the BIOS Annual conference. Registration and accommodation will be provided for the conference.
6. Further fellowships may be commenced based on future MOU’s
